DVD Decrypter and Recode2

~ Movie Only Guide ~

The following guide uses DVD Decrypter and Nero's Recode2 to make a "Movie only" backup with working menus. This guide is designed for the novice, to provide you with the highest quality backup, with a minimum amount of steps. Technical knowledge not required ~ :D)

When you have a DVD you wish to backup, with all of it's "menus" AND you want it easy to navigate through. You don't want all the "extras," just the (Movie only), AND you wish to do it perfectly, following this, "ScubaPete Guide" to make your job a snap. It's quick and easy and can copy most DVD's with little or no compression.

Are you ready ? Of course you are, Outstanding !

To make our journey easier and to insure we don’t miss a vital step, let’s PRINT THIS GUIDE OUT ~ Why you ask ? So that, as we’re going through it, we can “check off” each step off as we do it. That way, we miss nothing. I knew you’d understand. Ready now ? Good !

To begin, let's create a main folder on your HD.

Try to put it someplace where you won't forget it. Name it something that deals with your DVD video work so you can always find it, i.e. C:/ Desktop/ All My DVD Work. This is the place on your HD where all of your future DVD work will be done. In this main folder, you'll need to make a temporary folder where you can put your burning files. Simply name it "TEMP." Every time you burn a movie you'll put your "burning files" there. As one movie replaces another, the files in this folder should delete each other.

For your movie, create a second folder in the main folder named for your movie, i.e." C:/ Desktop/ All My DVD Work / Species 3 eats Forest Gump Alive."

Now, and this is very IMPORTANT !

Create a final folder, this one being inside your movie's folder and name it VIDEO_TS. Written just like that, all in CAP's as it's case sensitive. When DVD Decrypter decrypts your original DVD, it just spits out VOB, IFO and BUP files. You need all of those files inside your VIDEO_TS folder in order for Recode2 to see them and pick them up . . . .

Example:

You need to have your files in a VIDEO_TS folder

As you sea, the VIDEO_TS folder is inside the movie's folder.

Yes, I know, it seems like a lot of work now BUT you'll only be doing it this one time, Once it's set up, it's there for all your future backups. You'll then be able to "Click" your way to a great backups INCLUDING editing in mere minutes. OK ? Good ! We've had enough of a "break," let's get going . . . . Our backup awaits us.

Next, we need to download DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0.~

Here's the link for that:

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/DVDdecrypter.zip

Got it? Kweel, lets rip this "puppy" Like a "Big Dog" !

Open DVD Decrypter ~ Under "Mode" select "File." Where it says, "Source" you'll put either your DVD-ROM drive ( where the original resides OR, if you don't have a DVD-ROM drive then place the disc in your DVD burner's drive.) and choose that as your source. Lastly, where it says "Destination", select that VIDEO_TS folder we just made inside your movie's folder where we can work on our project.

Now we've got to make one little adjustment first. Go to "Tools," then Settings then select the I/O tab where we're going to "tick" the box that says, "Ignore read errors." Now "Click" OK ! This adjustment will make our work go much easier as we won't be bogged down by unnecessary errors, caused by small scratches on the original disc which happen all too often. Now that we’re almost finished here, you’ll sea we have all of our files where we can find them and, more importantly, where Nero's Recode2 can easily pick them up. To finish here, just ”Click” the "Disc to Hard Drive (HD for short)" icon to start DVD Decrypter (DVDD for short) to work for us.

Now, we wait for DVDD's "music" to play to signal it's completion.

Me, Ooohh, I'm going to the corner store to grab a Coke and a candy bar. I'll be back when DVD Decrypter's finished.

Sea that ? I'm back, as promised, just as the "music's" finished. Great timing, wouldn’t you say ? (Yea, I knew you would :)

Well, Alrighty then, lets move on to our next step . . . .

Let's download Nero 6 Ultra Edition:

http://ww2.nero.com/us/nero-up.php

Now that the main proggy is downloaded and installed, we need to download Recode2 into it. Find Nero's Recode2 in "Package 2" in the above Nero link. (you good kid you :)

Extremely kweel ! We're now ready to "Kick some DVD video butt" !

In order to find Recode2 without any problem, let's go to "Start," "All Programs," "Nero," then "NeroVision Express 3," then "Recode". Now, "Double-click" Recode. Excellent !

When it shows up, I want you to select "Remake a DVD." When that opens, I want you to lQQk to the right-hand side of the window and almost at the bottom, you'll see a "Drop-down" box which says "DVD-5 (4.7GB)," "Click" on that and choose "Custom" and set the size between "4300MB" and "4360MB." - We do this to make sure that we don't write too close to the edge of the disc. Writing too close to the disc's edge can cause "Skips," "Freezing" and coasters in your backup, even when using the best of DVD media.

As for your DVD blank media, THIS IS IMPORTANT ! Poor quality DVD blanks are responsible for a host of backup errors and hence, failures. Let’s lQQk for the following brands of DVD discs: Phillips, Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData G03's, Maxell +R and Fuji +R's BUT not the -R's as they can’t be trusted, Verbatim DataLife, Verbatim DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO." This indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc. Other discs such as Memorex, "Great AZO", and Princo are, in a word, crap. As a general rule, the vast majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi and RICOH are good bets.

Now, lQQk straight up from that “Drop-down” window and "Click," "Import Titles." Now "Browse" until you find that movie folder of yours and it's VIDEO_TS folder, once there, keep clicking until you get into it's VIDEO_TS," folder. When you've arrived there, another window will open, ~ under the heading, "Main Movie" it will say, "Title 1." "Click and drag" that "Title 1" from the right-side of the window to the left-side, under where it says, "Content" and drop it there.

Back to that small window and, at it's bottom, "Click" "Closed or Finished." Now, in the same area, "Click" "Next."

In this next window, you'll sea, at the top, "Destination", Browse until you find your burner ~ put your burner there. Under that you'll sea, "Folder for temporary files", back to your original folder and select your "TEMP" folder and put that in there.

Down toward the bottom you'll find 2 boxes. The first says, "Writing speed," select 4X so you don't end up with a coaster. In the next box, choose the number of copies you wish to burn. To the left of those boxes, you'll find 3 more boxes.

The first, burn at once, should not be "ticked" unless you opt for speed and don't mind chancing a coaster. For above average quality, leave that box clear.

The second box is for Advanced Analysis." To obtain the highest quality possible, you'll want that box "ticked." Leaving that box "un-ticked" will speed your burn if you don't like quality. (Lol, who hates quality ?) Deep Analysis, Recoding X-2, along with slow recoding makes your backup so close to the original it's almost impossible to tell the difference.

Below that box you'll see the last one, which reads, "High Quality Mode." These last 2 features are the ones that, when "ticked," make this program one of the finest programs around, producing backups which very few others can match.

Using Recode2 with these last 2 options "ticked" provides you with such great quality it simply "Blows" DVD XCopy, 1 Click, DVDClonerII, dvd Santa and almost every other program of that type right out of the water.

Though they do take a little longer, quality is what it's all about. Quality is what makes the difference between a VW Bug and a Mercedes 500 SL. As always, it's your choice.

Now, simply "Click" "Burn" and go have a cup of coffee and relax until it's done.

This is not the time to multi-task. Encoding, Recoding and burning are the 3 most labor intensive things your home PC processor will ever do. Nothing else is like it, not burning CD's, graphics, nothing, UNLESS, you're into mathematical extrapolation. If you want a burn without the chance of errors, leave your PC alone. After all this work, let's not mess it up by stealing resources away from our project . . . . .

You have done well until now, don't mess it up during the final last stage of the process ~

A last suggestion ~ Though I've endeavored to make this guide as error free as I can, different PC configurations, burners and media can conspire to make a coaster no matter how hard we try to avoid them.

This might be a good time to use a DVD-RW disc. We won't use them regularly because for 1, many older DVD players don't play them and 2, they cost too much (Lol). We might want to use them now so, if we make a mistake, it won't cost us a disc. (I hate to lose even one. :) When we get our steps down pat, it should only take a time or two, we'll then switch to our single-write media.

Iffin ya followed all my steps, used good media and you took your time we should wind up with a perfect backup our first time out of the gate ~

Well I expect you to let me know how you did. I'll be lQQking for your report ~ :D)

Well, it's time for me to "shuffle off", swim fins under my arm. Got to get to "Video's "r" us" to grab a flick or two and stop by my "Watering hole" to snatch up a 6-pack of something frothy. It's the "Gal's night out " and I want to enjoy the quiet :)

Enjoy your backup and, as I said, ”Let me know how you made out.” ~

Cheers,

Pete

PS Yea, I know, it's not such a "mini-Guide" BUT I think it's a good one, let me know what you think ~ :D)
