Copy the Movie only with Shrink and Nero

A "Movie Only" backup is just the ticket if you just want to watch the movie. Put the copy in your DVD player and the movie starts. No complex menus or boring extra features, no "Preview of Coming Attractions" and no directors commentary.
Your movie will need a lot less compression so the quality will be better than you would get if you had all the other junk taking up room on the disc.

Part 1-Install Shrink

Be aware that newer movies suffer from added encryption in the form of Sony ARCOSS, Macrovison Ripguard and Puppetlock. Shrink will crash every time, with all kinds of error messages and freeze ups.
For movies like this you need to use one of Alkohol's free methods, aka: Ripit4Me, or do what I do and just run a small program called AnyDVD in the background. It will stop all that nonsense!

Before installation:
A well maintained computer is important! Do a disc clean-up and defragmentation. Make sure you have plenty of room on your HDD. you should have at least 15 GB , hopefully a lot more than that. You should have a minimum of 256 MB of RAM. 512 MB is better and 1 GB or more is excellent.

About DVD Shrink:
Shrink Screenshot: here.
This program is used to read and analyze your commercial DVD. It will remove the CSS which is the encryption found on the original. It will apply the needed compression so your original movie, which is way to big, to fit on your blank.
DVD shrink cannot burn at all. It can use Nero, DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn or CopytoDVD to burn with, but only if you have these programs installed.
Shrink will create a "working folder" for you. However, it is better to make one yourself and place it on your desktop so you can find it if and when you need it. Maybe you want to make another copy. You can find the files!

Getting Shrink ready:
Open Shrink
It has a lot of settings you can change, but for the most part the default settings are OK.

A look quick at the user interface:

Shrink Menu:
Top, left side, find the Shrink menu. It has File, Edit, View, and Help.

Shrink Icons:
Below the menu are six icons. These are where you control and call for the various functions you may want Shrink to do.

Size bar:
Below the icons please notice the bar that goes all the way across the window. This is the indicator that lets you know how large your project is.

No Movie:

Shrink will compress larger movies to 4,464 MB or to the custom target size setting if that is used.

Red should not be showing. Shrink will try to add as much compression as needed to fit the movie to the default or, if used, the custom target size. If the movie exceeds Shrinks' ability to compress. red will appear in the bar.
The bar will be green with no red when you have a movie in the program and it is fitting correctly.

The left and right areas below the bar:
You will see different items on both sides once the movie is in the program.
The large dark area is the preview screen.

Simple changes to get Shrink ready:
From the menu, top left, select "Edit" and from the list, Select Preferences. This opens the tabbed DVD Shrink Preferences menu...
Edit Preferences

The first tab, Preferences, shows a DVD target size of DVD-5(4.7 GB). Change it to "Custom" and then type in 4360.
Note:
Changing the size is optional. I use excellent quality blank DVDs so I use a target size of 4464 MB which is the default setting. A lower target size prevents burning near the outer edge of the disc, where problems can occur, especially with poor media.
Below that, uncheck the "Run analysis and backup in low priority mode.." box. Check the two boxes above that.

Preferences

Next click the File I/O tab and make sure "Enable burning with Nero" is checked.

File I/O
Click OK to save the settings and close the Preferences menu.
